"Go and see them if you can for one of the best gigs of your life"
NOW THEN MAGAZINE 12-piece powerhouse Agbeko have been erupting dancefloors across Europe since first taking the stage in 2016. Inspired by the lineage of Afrobeat from Fela Kuti through to Antibalas via modern-day psychedelia of The Heliocentrics and The Shaolin Afronauts, Agbeko seek to write their own chapter with their unique combination of Ethio-jazz and British Protest Song-meets-avant-rock. Channelled through an onslaught of horns, driven grooves, moving lyrics and cathartic soloing, Agbeko's songs call out corruption and embolden the collective pull towards societal change and healing in our times. Penned by Jamie Stockbridge and borne by a virtuosic collective featuring dual front-women Amber Kuti & Mali Hayes, their music soundtracks a congregation revelling upon a world on the brink. They performed as musical hometown ambassadors at Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall.
Drawing as equally from Fela Kuti and Mulatu Astatke as they do from Led Zeppelin and Woody Guthrie, ‘Agbeko are their own force of nature, with a message, an understanding and a consitent ability to erupt a dance floor’ (Groovement). "I got so lost in the sound I actually fell over... It was completely out of hand"
